The reserve is owned, managed and run 'hands
on' by the owners, the Bean family, who
are now in their sixth generation and have
owned the original farm, Orlando, since
the early 1800's. After nearly 25 years
of experience in the safari business, Peter
and his team have created a unique, relaxed
and truly South African experience at Schotia.
Schotia has a huge open air lapa, reputedly
among the largest in South Africa. It has
reed and sneezewood walls and is open to
the African skies, except for the outer
ring where a traditionally thatched roof
covers the dining tables and bar area. Inside
the lapa there are several large 'Schotia'
trees and a roaring log fire. Dinner is
usually a mix of safari cuisine and traditional
South African cooking, the exact menu depends
on what is available on the day.
Just a short drive from Port Elizabeth,
Addo or Grahamstown, Schotia is a unique
experience not to be missed.
